To get back in the good graces of his father, wealthy society-boy Ellis, his wife Madeleine and his best friend Hank decide to cross the ocean in the midst of World War II to prove the existence of Nessie, the Loch Ness monster. Their journey isn´t at all what they expected and as time passes, Madeleine discovers the beauty of Scottland and it´s people.
The plot seems rather ridiculous to you? I´m not going to contradict you. Going into a war zone to find a mythical monster, doesn´t strike me as the wisest move. The good thing is: it doesn´t matter that much, since their isn´t much of a story in the first place.
Basically we are following Madeleine, our MC, on her daily shenanigans through the Scottish countryside and experience, how she turns from a whiny, money-throwing society-bore to an indepent and strong women. I guess I should feel some sympathies for her, but I didn´t like her. She is nothing more than a push-over, who get´s constantly manipulated by her stupid-ass husband. She isn´t as bad as her douche-bag husband and his equally disgusting friend, but still, I didn´t like her.
One more thing I didn´t like about this book were the sudden appearance of Insta-love that happened throughout it. I had a slight suspision that a love-story is about to happen, but I didn´t feel the growing connection between these two people.
So did I enjoy this novel? Yes, I enjoyed it actually very much, despite all of its flaws. I was enamoured by it and for some unknown reason I just had to know what is going to happen next. I loved the setting of this novel and the descriptions of the Scottish countryside, the Scottish people and the inn, where Madeleine is staying. The whole narrative had a cozy feel to it and I enjoyed this very much.
I guess I have been in the right mood for this book. At any other time I would probably have thrown the book at a wall, just because two of the characters are nothing short of vomit-inducing. But as it is now, I really liked it.
