Pyretheum is supposed to have caused the mutations in the cockroaches. Pyretheum... laced with plutonium, maybe?

 

As expected, the scientific explanations are completely bonkers. Oh, and btw, there isn´t just nasty stuff going on with the mutant cockroaches, but there are some particularly gory scenes with rats as well.
